A rollable ultra-light polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell

چکیده
We have developed a highly flexible, ultra-light and thin polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell that can be used as a portable power source for flexible electronics. To achieve such flexibility and ultra-lightness, we fabricated a thin flow-field plate using a thermal imprinting process and combined it with a laser-machined metal current collector. The air-breathing fuel cell, with a thickness of 0.992 mm and a weight of 2.23 g, demonstrated a total power of 508 mW and a performance degradation of o10% after severe bending fatigue (200 repeated bends). This high power per weight (0.228 W g−1) and robust bending durability have never been observed before. The highly flexible architecture enabled the operation of the fuel cell in an S-shape or even in a rolled-up state without any significant performance loss. We have fabricated a cylindrical planar stack of 10 fuel cells and successfully carried out its outdoor operation to demonstrate its practical applications in various fields. Numerical Simulation of Non-Uniform Gas Diffusion Layer Porosity Effect on Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Performance
Gas diffusion layers are essential components of proton exchange membrane fuel cell since the reactants should pass through these layers. Mass transport in these layers is highly dependent on porosity. Many of simulations have assumed, for simplicity, the porosity of GDL is constant, but in practice, there is a considerable variation in porosity along gas diffusion layers. In the present study ...

Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics in house-code of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) has been developed. The conservation equations are numerically solved using finite volume technique. One of the important goals of this research is the investigation of the variation of bipolar plates width effect on the fuel cell performance compared with the conventional m...
متن کاملA review of the main mechanisms of catalyst layer degradation in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and different performance recovery methods
This paper reviewed over 100 articles on the subject of the mechanism of catalyst layer (CL) degradation and the effect of various contaminations in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Also the recovery of PEMFC via different types of methods, the causes and fundamental mechanisms of cell degradation and their influence on long- term performance of PEM fuel cell were discussed i...
متن کاملEffect of CO in the reformatted fuel on the performance of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell
There are several obstacles to the commercialization of PEM fuel cells. One of the reasons is that the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) in the reformatted fuel, even at a very small scale, decreases the fuel cell performance. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of CO in reformatted fuel on PEM fuel cell performance. For this purpose, a steady state, one-dimensional and non-isoth...
متن کاملFunctionalized and Electrospun Polymeric Materials as High-Performance Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell: A Review
Proton exchange membranes (PEM) for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) have main drawbacks which are methanol permeability, reduced proton conductivity and the cost of the membrane. This paper reviews different polymeric materials such as fluorinated, non-fluorinated, acid-base complex, and composite membranes for DMFC. Currently, nonfluorinated membranes gain a lot of atte...
